Born in Dawson, Georgia and raised in Tampa, Florida, Jimmie excelled academically and athletically, reaching the professional ranks of minor league baseball before his life was upended by one of America's most egregious miscarriages of justice.

What Happened?
Jimmie was a member of the famed Belmont Heights Little League Team and graduated from Tampa Bay Vocational Technical High School. In 1984, he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs, playing 4 seasons in the minor leagues while studying business management at Tampa College during the off-season.
In 1987, while playing with the Charleston Wheelers in West Virginia, two women were assaulted and over 140 Black men — including Jimmie — were rounded up. He was cleared. Two years later, he was re-arrested, extradited, and convicted despite no forensic evidence. He was sentenced to 110 years.
While incarcerated, Jimmie refused to be defined by his circumstances. He earned three Associate Degrees, taught himself the law, and served as a legal representative for fellow prisoners. After 27 years, the US District Court ruled his conviction a "total miscarriage of justice." All charges were formally dropped on September 7, 2016.
Since his release, Jimmie has channeled his experience into advocacy — speaking to universities, corporations, and prisons across the country. He founded Gardner House, a reentry home for returning citizens, and is married to US District Court Judge Leslie Abrams Gardner.
